100 things you might not know about Northstowe

Over the coming months on our social media channels, we’ll be taking a dive into Northstowe Town's past, present and future through a new series we’re calling the Northstowe 100.

We’ve borrowed the name from the town’s roots, with a ‘hundred’ being the old English name for a subdivision of a county, with each having its own court. Going all the way back to 1086, William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book referred to the ‘Hundred of Northstow’ (with no ‘e’), which consisted of the parishes of Girton, Impington, Landbeach, Lolworth, Longstanton, Madingley, Milton, Oakington, Rampton and Waterbeach.

Somewhere along the line, ‘Northstow’ became ‘Northstowe’, and the Hundred retained roughly the same composition until the 19th century. The name ‘Northstowe’ became lost to time, until it was resurrected for our town.

A lot has happened since then, and plenty more is yet to happen in Northstowe. As our town continues to grow and create its own history, we’ll be providing fun facts and trivia through the Northstowe 100, bringing everyone a little closer to the town they call home.

Of course, some of the best knowledge of the area exists within the community, so if you have a fact or story about Northstowe you’d like to share, go ahead and drop us a line.
