The quarterly Northstowe Community Forum was well attended again by the local community who were keen to hear about recent progress on site.  Here’s an update for those who were unable to attend.

It was good to see presentations from three of the housebuilders that will be building homes on Phase One of Northstowe: Bloor Homes Eastern, Barratt Homes and Taylor Wimpey.

A14 update and community fund

The A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement scheme has been given the go ahead for construction. The decision was announced by the Secretary of State on Wednesday 11 May, following a statutory Development Consent Order (DCO) examination by the Planning Inspectorate.

Surveys, surveys and more surveys!

As we get ever closer to start of construction on phase 2 we are busy with updating environmental and engineering surveys and preparing pre-commencement works. These updates and additional surveys are vital to enable us to bring forward the detailed design of phase two and ensure that we can manage and minimise future construction impacts by having up-to-date and detailed information.

The next Northstowe Community Forum will be held on 20th July at Longstanton Village Institute from 7pm until 9pm.  Representatives from the phase one housebuilders will be joining us.

Big things planned for healthy town

As a town planner working for the Homes and Communities Agency, Northstowe is a once in a life time opportunity to create a successful new place from scratch. It is quite a responsibility and I am getting involved in a number of initiatives that require thought from the outset of the detailed design stages.  One of these is the Healthy Towns initiative set up by NHS England whereby new developments could apply to be designated a Healthy Town.

What is a Design Code?

HCA is about to consult on the ‘Design Code’ for phase two at Northstowe – this document acts as a critical link between outline planning and detailed design.  Katja Stille, Associate Director at Tibbalds talks further about the importance of Design Codes to large scale developments in particular – both in terms of maintaining quality of design and as a great tool for delivery of new communities.

Hatton's Road Ponds - excavation begins

Work on excavating the two large ponds beside the B1050 Hatton’s Road is anticipated begin on 04 April (subject to favourable weather) and last 6 months. The ponds provide essential flood mitigation for Longstanton village as well as new habitats for water voles and kingfishers.

Finds at Oakington Barracks - WWII bombs and scrap metal

The safe removal of UXO from Oakington Barracks marks the first stage of a long remediation and investigation process on Phase 2 that will include; ecology mitigation, archaeological surveys and ground investigations before any construction enabling work can start.  Mike Sainsbury from specialist UXO disposal company Zetica talks us through the process in more detail, including building and constructing a special on site facility.
