Living in Northstowe – preparing for the first residents!

Tuesday, February 28, 2017 - 12:15

A new community wing at the school, a pop up café, a self-service micro library - preparations underway to welcome first residents of Northstowe helped by the nearby residents.

The Welcome Information pack, prepared with the help and local knowledge of the Northstowe Community Working Group (NCWG), is nearing completion.  The pack contains some of the essential information that could prove invaluable in those early days after arriving.

There will be information on walking and cycling routes, travel and transport options, education, local health services, the nearest pub and even tips on how to sort your recycling into the right bins!  The local history society, Longstanton & District Heritage Society , have also put together a keepsake history booklet that sets out the site’s past and history of the neighbouring villages of Longstanton, Oakington and Westwick.

The Northstowe Community Working Group (NCWG) is a resident-led volunteer group interested in building the new community at Northstowe, and they will help deliver the packs by hand to giving all new residents a personal welcome to the area.

Where the streets have no name...

Local residents and schoolchildren have also been getting involved in naming the new streets of Northstowe.   An amazing response was received at the end of last year as hundreds of suggestions poured in…including themes linked to the natural habitat and wildlife of the area, previous uses of the site such as the golf course, its ancient history (such as Roman and Anglo Saxon with some names even being taken from the Doomsday book) and of course more poignant names to remember the area’s more recent military past.

Plans for the community wing at the school are coming along too including the setting up of a pop up café, a self-service micro library, children’s and other activities within the early months of opening.  So a busy few months ahead…

Remember to come along and join us at the next quarterly Northstowe Community Drop-in and Forum on Wednesday 26 April so you can get the latest updates and information from the developers, house builders and planners.   Held at The Pathfinder School, Northstowe (access off Station Rd B1050), the drop-in starts at 6pm followed by the Forum between 7 -9pm.  Hope to see you there.
